Today in class we went deeper into the discussion of what site and situation mean and a few examples of each. But since I've already gone over what they mean, I'll just give more examples of how we explained them more thoroughly today. One example of how we explained these was through ships. Mr. Schick told us that he has a friend who was a ship pilot and travels the world delivering and receiving different resources for countries around the world. This wouldn't be possible without a place for the ship to load and unload it's resources. That is a good example for site because since we have access to the harbor in Baltimore we can send ships. A good example of situation is Washington D.C. Washington depends on it's tourists for Presidential sites and museums. These are the two explained a little better. I feel I've grasped these definitions and examples a little better since our discussions in class. However, a test still seems to much for right now and what I kn
Today in my human geography class, we went over notes on site and situation. These two terms are used to describe different areas around the world. Site is where a location is based of of the natural resources that grow there. Mr. Schick gave us the example of when he drove up to Oregon and all it is is straight corn fields the whole way across. Oregon is so flat and the temperature is just right, making it great for growing crops. Situation is where buildings may be built and added to the area not just because of the resources there. An example of this was New York. New York was just built upon the land. Because New York is such a popular place to live (especially Manhattan where all the sky scrapers are) owning land there costs millions of dollars. My dream is to live in New York someday and do something involving movies or fashion. That'd be awesome! I wouldn't be starting a company there because I most likely won't be able to spare a million bucks but working for any co
Today in class you surprised me with a pop quiz that I was not very happy about. I hope I passed it. I wasn't ready at all. As Iv'e mentioned in recent blogs, I know very little on geography. I don't even know where Siberia or Brazil are and I defintily don't know what kind of people there are. But i'm not so worried about that, because I believe that you can't really know anything about a different place in the world unless you have actually been able to go there and experience it. I hope I am fortunate to travel the world someday. But because I probably won't be able to see the whole thing, I'd at least like to go somewhere out of the country! It's funny because most people who have a lot of money spend it on nice things. Nice things are nice, but I would use the money in a more beneficial way for myself. I guess some people just don't understand that a big part of our life is learning and discovering new things. That's why we are here afte
Today in class, we discussed the different countries of the world and the wars involving them. It was important to learn about this because not every kid knows how other countries including us have been effected by nuclear bombs, and terror threats. For example, I didn't know that we bombed Japan to put an end to World War 2. Was that the best approach we could come to conclusion to make in order to resolve the fight? Probably not considering that it killed thousands of people who were innocent, instantly. I mean it did give them a scare and make them surrender but we could have thought of a better way. Now we are probably seen as the country who could just bomb you any time. And it's good to have control, but we should be the country that all the other countries want to become. To many, we probably are, but I can't say much because I still need to learn more about those countries in order to make a logical statement. I look forward to learning more on the topic Mr. Schick!
Another day of our Human Geography  class has gone by, where we have discussed different locations of the world and how they differ from others. For example, an example of our different locations was me. I live in Cecil County where most of the kids in my class live in Harford County. Most of us have probably been to Cecil County, but if you haven't this is what it is like. Cecil County is more trees and grass land, while Harford County is more houses and buildings. This means that I most likely have more land than those who live in Harford County. I don't live in a neighborhood, when the majority of you guys do. However, I don't live close to the things I would like to be closer to like school, shops, restaurants, etc. Cecil County is kind of like the boonies to you guys if you think about it. Our pay is also very different. The taxes in Cecil for land are not as much as in Harford County. That is why we are able to have more land and still be able to pay for it. Most peop
Today in class we started mentally mapping out the continents and our route to school. I think I was actually pretty good at doing both. It's funny because our parents get on us in the car when they think our heads are drilled to our phones. They think our lives revolve around them. They don't. Phones have made us smarter human beings as a whole. We should actually know more than older generations because we are fortunate enough to have the technology we have to answer basically any question we need to know. Technology makes us smarter, it's not distracting us from the world, it's teaching us. I also believe that technology helps us with photo graphic memory. That's why I was able to mentally draw our continents and routes. I'm very bad at geography. From my old school, we had had no studies of geography. Like barely. So I'm excited to further my knowledge in this class, and learn more on the topic.
Since we didn't do much in class today, I'm just going to write about what we have talked about so far. I'm still waiting to learn more about this unit, because the whole talk about the maps being wrong, and us never fixing it just blows my mind. So it will be interesting to see what else Mr. Schick has in store. Speaking of Mr. Schick, we learned that he was apart of the making in "Home Alone" and Uncle Buck." I would definitely be interested in joining his TV production classes. I have some questions. Does it take place like a real class? When is it? Do I have to be in a certain grade to take it? If you could answer these, that would be great! I think it's crazy that some people already know what they want to do when they ar eolder, especially when adults ask us because I have no idea. Well that's not entirely true. Of course I have thought about it and everything I have considered in some way involves the arts. I like acting, drawing, movies, bakin
OK let me just say that what we learned in class today blew my mind. I'm actually still a little confused. First of all, why are we using maps that aren't even accurate? Second, why are there different maps anyway? We should all have the same maps. How did this even happen though? I liked the West World clip we watched today. It gave me and I think everyone a better understanding of what was going on. Especially when it showed examples of how different the sizing and looks of the countries looked. It shocks me that people didn't notice this earlier, and those who did obviously havent spoke up because classrooms all around the world are using the wrong map. When I saw the right one (after Mr. Shick pointed it out) I saw the difference. To conclude, I think this is a problem that needs ti be fixed as soon as possible, or else we will all still be learning the wrong material.
Today in class, we started our next unit. This unit isn't about a certain culture, but geographical regions. I've never taken a geography class. In middle school we never even really talked about it, Just about the wars over and over. From the activity we did in class, I can tell this is going to be a hard unit, and not so easy to get by as the first one. I really like geography because I think it's important to learn about our earth, and the way it looks. I hope to be fortunate enough to get to travel out of this country some day, and see other regions. This is something I wish everyone could experience. Right now, I kinda feel like I just have a imaginary world of what I think other countries look like. To me, I've always felt like we are the most established country just because of what my teachers say. So I've created this image that other countries are poor, dirty, not as technically educated as we are. This is not true. When I see pictures of other countries,
Today in class we took a test on Ancient Greece, Socrates, and A Message to Garcia. I think I did pretty well. I know a couple are probably wrong. What sucks is that I knew one on the fill in the blanks answer started with an s and I just couldn't remember. So as soon as I turned in my test and looked in my notes for the answer, I knew it right away. That sucked. I hope the whole class gets an A (including me) but that is not likely. Over all, it seemed pretty easy, it just caught me on a few. I liked learning about Greece, but I would like to get further into the material, and learn a little more about the cultures. This test came pretty fast too, so maybe the next won't come so fast, though it would probably have more to answer on it. That's the downside. What are we learning next? I think some interesting topics to learn about would be the wars and the way people lived in different times back then. But maybe not so far back. It tends to seem like we always learn about th
I am pretty confident for our test tomorrow on Ancient Greece. It seems it came pretty fast, however I think I will do pretty good. Going over questions that might be asked was definitely helpful! It also gave me a way to study. Some things were asked that I hadn't even thought of, so hopefully now I will know more than I would have coming into class tomorrow. People asking these questions, also gave me a kind of reminder on what we've already learned so far. Though it seems like we haven't been working on this topic for long, I already feel like I have a good grasp on the subject. However, i'm a little startled that we are already having a test on this information. It makes me wonder are all the tests going to come out of nowhere? Now getting off that topic, I'd like to bring up how you were talking about movies. Where you really an assistant director? Home Alone and Uncle Buck? That's amazing! One of the many jobs I've ever thought about doing, was being i
This week in class, we learned a lot of new information on Socrates and Ancient Greece. One of the highlights was definitely how Socrates died, and what he left behind him. Socrates died guilty of teaching what didn't seem the right Gods  and corrupting the youth of Athens. Later on he was found innocent. What makes him a hero or legend, is that he was willing to go down knowing that he did nothing wrong. The people would understand later that he was right in what he taught and what he believed. A famous quote of his (that is still popular today) states, "An unexamined life is not worth living." This is such an important lesson that everyone needs to learn. Are you the person who chooses to leave work everyday, come home, watch TV, and then go to bed? The kind of person who just wastes their life away? No. We were gifted with the ability to do things that other creatures can't, so why waste it? We should be abusing that gift. This is what Socrates intended us to get
Today in class, we discussed the meaning and ways of Ancient Greece. Like us, they had a Democracy, however, they basically created one. They were the founders of Democracy. An important person we also researched was Socrates. He was a Greek philosopher and credited as one of the founders of the Western philosophy. His job was to teach many about the different Gods. But was sentenced to death when higher authorities got frustrated with him. He was claimed to have been teaching the wrong Gods, and corrupted the youth of Athens. Therefore, he was put on trial and forced to drink poisoned hemlock. Later it was found that he was guilty. Socrates never forced them to learn about or believe in different Gods, but just "mentioned" them. Socrates would be known as a
Today in class, we learned a little more background information about the story "A Message To Garcia." It was published in 1899, where it soon went viral. More than 14 million copies were sold, and two movies were made. Many looked to this as an inspirational story. It makes people stop and think of all the potential they have, but why they don't use it to their advantage. Most think, "It's not my job, can't you do it?" This is a bad way to look at your job. Are you going to be the person who makes their life miserable because they hate their job? But hey, it makes a lot of money so it's worth it right? Right? No. Don't be the person who spends their days counting them down. It's important to find a job that you enjoy, even if it doesn't make the salary you wished you had. I think this story does a good job at explaining this. This is also something we went over in class today, that I tend to think about a lot. I want to wake up everyday
The world is constantly wanting new and more. People seem to need a trophy for the excellence's, or they need a bribe to get something done. As it is shown in the short story "A Message To Garcia" by Elbert Hubbard, where he explains how this is a common conflict in the business world. Employers are always gonna be looking for that perfect someone who does their job without problem. Though they will soon find that that person doesn't exist. But why stop looking right? I mean there are 7 billion people in this world, there has to be at least one? No, no there isn't, and this story gives countless examples of workers who aren't perfect.               For instance, a man who is asked by his boss to research a random topic out of nowhere might respond with "Why can't you?" or "Was I hired for that?" Now the boss would've liked the man to have said, "Yes, sir," and go do the task. But no one would say that, and eve
