The world is constantly wanting new and more. People seem to need a trophy for the excellence's, or they need a bribe to get something done. As it is shown in the short story "A Message To Garcia" by Elbert Hubbard, where he explains how this is a common conflict in the business world. Employers are always gonna be looking for that perfect someone who does their job without problem. Though they will soon find that that person doesn't exist. But why stop looking right? I mean there are 7 billion people in this world, there has to be at least one? No, no there isn't, and this story gives countless examples of workers who aren't perfect.
For instance, a man who is asked by his boss to research a random topic out of nowhere might respond with "Why can't you?" or "Was I hired for that?" Now the boss would've liked the man to have said, "Yes, sir," and go do the task. But no one would say that, and even if they tried to fulfill the wishes of the boss, it wouldn't be done just how he wanted it. Only he can make what is perfect to him. But let's say that instead the boss said, "If you go research this for me I'll give you a raise, but only if it is neat, organized, and thoroughly explained." The employee would put his heart into that research paper because he knew he was getting something to benefit him out of it.
Elbert Hubbard made a great realization when he stated that, "If men do not act for themselves, what will they do when the benefit of their effort is for all?" This is a very important realization, and the question is how do we get people to start doing things even though they won't benefit them, but maybe others? This is a question we must all answer our selves, that no one else can teach you, but you.
To conclude, Elbert Hubbard's short story gives good explanations on how and why today's society doesn't feel the need to do anything that isn't their job, unless it somehow benefits them.
What I plan to do to make my freshman year at John Carroll a success...
1. Knowing that I and everyone else will never be the perfect student, I plan on trying my best in whatever I am expected to do in my classes.
2. Be more organized
3. I'm often very hard on myself, so relaxing when I get worried is something to work on, especially because I'm always gonna be busy.
4. Make good friends
5. Get more sleep so each day I'm at my best
